The department has issued notice to these firms and further action would be taken after giving them a hearing.

In the wake of growing number of accidents, the transport commissioner had given instructions to MVD officials to inspect driving schools that do not train drivers properly. Of the 60 driving schools the MVD checked so far, the team found that ten such schools located in Vytilla, Aluva, Vypeen, Perumpadappu and Tripunithura were functioning without proper facilities. Most of these firms didn't even have offices. Under the limits of Ernakulam regional transport office, there are around 150 driving schools. "We inspected 60 schools so far. Around 20 of them are well equipped. Ten of them lacked even basic facilities. Others have certain defects, but can function after rectifying these defects," he said.

The motor vehicles department has to ensure that a driving school has all required facilities before granting recognition. "We issue licences only after conducting proper inspection and ensuring that the firm comply with all the norms,'' claimed an MVD official. But the inspection proved otherwise as some didn't even have offices or even classrooms. The department is yet to check vehicles used for training people. The MVD is planning to complete the drive in a few weeks.
