Tanya Kasputis served time at MCI-Framingham and is now on probation. She said a simple white sweater from Hope's Closet made a huge difference."It was extremely helpful, seeing as you get released with no money in your pocket and no clothes on your back," said Kasputis. "You are also helping that person not re-offend or try to get a leg up and feel like a human being walking down the street."The court staff said what's so rewarding is that most people take very little from the closet, knowing there are so many others in need.After taking that white sweater, Kasputis is getting back on her feet. She recently donated a bag of clothes to Hope's Closet as a gesture of thanks."I have to say that because of probation I am standing in front of you today without cuffs on my hands," said Kasputis. "If you are doing the right thing they are willing to help you. If everybody did their part and there were little steps it helps you when you get to the big things." 

Hope's Closet is the only one of its kind in the state. But now other courthouses are interested in setting up shop, too.Cornell fiber scientists and fashion designers, working with a Canadian apparel'pany, are making sustainability chic by refashioning old clothes found in Haitian secondhand markets into hip new threads.Funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, three professors and four students are helping Toronto-based LB Designs improve its methods to dismantle discarded clothing and use the pieces to create pants, shirts, jackets and other professional wear for young men and women.
